Several ideas have been advanced on the origin of the word “Dubai.” According to one explanation, the term used to be the souq in Ba. According to an Arabic proverb, “Daba Dubai” (Arabic: ) means “They arrived with a lot of money.” According to Fedel Handhal, an expert on the history and culture of the UAE, the term Dubai may have derived from the Arabic word daba (a past tense derivation of yadub (Arabic: ), which means “to creep”), alluding to the gradual passage of Dubai Creek inland. Ahmad Mohammad Obaid, a poet and scholar, connects it back to the same name, but to its alternate meaning of “baby locust” (Arabic: ) owing to the prevalence of locusts in the area prior to civilization.

The history of human habitation in the region currently occupied by the UAE is rich and complicated, pointing to major commercial linkages between the civilisations of the Indus Valley and Mesopotamia, as well as as far away as the Levant. Archaeological findings in the emirate of Dubai, particularly at Al-Ashoosh and Al Sufouh, as well as the exceptionally rich treasure from Saruq Al Hadid, reveal habitation in the UAE during the Ubaid and Hafit eras, the Umm Al Nar and Wadi Suq periods, and the three Iron Ages. The Sumerians called the location Magan, and it was a source of metallic products, particularly copper and bronze.

Traditional Arab culture is a major component of UAE culture. Its architecture, music, clothes, food, and way of life all heavily reflect Arab and Islamic culture. Muslims are summoned to prayer five times every day from the minarets of mosques located all around the nation. As a compromise between Friday’s sacredness to Muslims and the Western weekend of Saturday and Sunday, the weekend has been Friday and Saturday since 2006. The previous weekend was from Thursday to Friday.
